Uzziah (Uzziahu, Azariah, Azariahu) ben Amatzya (II Kings 15: 1-7; I Chronicles 3:12; II Chronicles 16)

Tenth king of Yehuda.  Uzziah ascends the throne at age 16 and rules in Jerusalem for 52 years. He is a strong king who defeats various enemies such as the Philistines and Ammonites.

Uzziah  is a righteous king, but because he does not prevent his people from sacrificing on high places,  God strikes him with leprosy. Since the king is forced to withdraw from office, his son Yotam runs the affairs of state.

A story in Divrei HaYamim (Chronicles) provides a different explanation for this king's leprosy. The king is a confident leader and expresses his arrogance by trying to burn incense in the Temple. Azaryahu the Kohen tries to stop him, warning him that such an act is permissible only to descendants of Aharon.  The king is insistent and as he stands in the Temple holding the censer, leprosy breaks out on his forehead. The Kohanim rush Uzziah  out of the sanctuary but it is too late - he is stricken and remains a leper for the rest of his life.
